A Bit Of Fan Art

I keep forgetting to post the illo by Santiago -the guy behind Tales Of The Kryptonian blog.  Yes, The Bat meets….well, guess?

D-Gruppe from 52 Pages to...3 Issues!

Initially, the plan was to always publish D-Gruppe: Zeitgeist as a 50+ pp comic album. However,as with a lot of plans, things began to get complicated.

Firstly, as this is an old strip from the early 1990s, it has to be cleaned-up somewhat. It was drawn when preparing a comic involved photocopying pages and adjusting copiers took out all those shadow-lines from paste-ups. Even using differing settings a scanner will pick up everything -its why they exist!

With work on lettering The Cross-Earths Caper, not to mention having to draw the final parts of The Jungle Planet and Xendragon and lettering those, I could not give us the time it would take to clean 50+ pages.
There is another problem. Over 50pp would mean the title would need to be priced at around £7.00.

Splitting the story into 22 and 23 pages with the final 12 pages in issue 4 (with back-up strips) means that the cover price is much, much lower.

It also means that I can concentrate on what happens in D-Gruppe: The Resurrection. That may turn into a bumper issue so that all the old stripwork is done with by issue 6 and everything then falls back into post Return Of The Gods continuity.

Will I answer the question of what happened to the D-Gruppe members who vanished while chasing a UFO? No. That will be another bumper issue, possibly for January, 2012.

As a little taster, I’ve added (below) three of the rough pages.  These might not appear in the final book.  Or, if they do, they’ll be drastically altered as they are some ten years old now!

And what is this other team of German characters that include Wildemann, Leere and Donar? Ahh, more of that in the post Return of the Gods issues!

Minck Osterveer on working in the European and American Comic Markets

with Minck Oosterveer and Jim Salicrup
Tuesday, June 21st

7-9pm
Admission: $5/Free for MoCCA Members

Sketching demonstration, refreshments and raffle to follow!

Join renowned “Nikky Saxx” and “Zombie Tales” artist Minck Oosterveer for an informal interview with comics editor extraordinaire Jim Salicrup for a lively evening as Minck discusses the differences, similarities and joys of working on European and American comics, his illustrative career in both, as well his recent work as the penciler on “Ruse” and Spiderman at Marvel Comics.

To say that Minck Oosterveer is a “zombie” artist is true enough… but is far from fully describing this wonderful talent!

The award-winning artist is known worldwide for a plethora of comic strips, movie work, and sequential art. Most notably here in the United States for such books as “Zombie Tales” and “The Unknown” with writer Mark Waid!

Growing up in The Netherlands (Holland) with European comics, he soon developed a strong interested in American comics, especially the newspaper comics of the 1930s-50s. It was the pulp-ish, direct style and the usage of black and white in realistic artwork that attracted him the most. Film Noir as it were.

Oosterveer’s work is strongly influenced by Milton Caniff, Alex Raymond, and Will Eisner. After working for a studio on productions like ‘Tom & Jerry’, ‘Sesame Street’, ‘Paddington’, ‘Ovide’ and ‘Spider-Man’, Minck Oosterveer moved more in the direction of another stylistic forte, working with Willem Ritstier on the series “Claudia Brücken” for the Franco-Belgian publishing-house ‘les editons Lombard’ and Tintin-Magazine .
The collaboration with Ritstier resulted in a daily newspaper comic in an American style, “Jack Pott”, published in the Dutch newspaper “Algemeen Dagblad.”

Since 1996 Oosterveer worked again with Willem Ritstier on the newspaper comic “Zodiak” for De Telegraaf, and series “Rick Rolluik” for Suske en Wiske-magazine, and “Arachna” for ComicWatch-magazine. He did the art and story for the comic “Excalibur”, published by Enigma and artwork for a successful animated movie, ‘”Mario A”.
In 2002, Oosterveer and Ritstier started a new daily comic strip in De Telegraaf, called “Nicky Saxx”, one of their most successful comic-series. This was followed by a comic-series entitled “Trunk” (2006), which debuted to critical acclaim. Next they teamed up (2007) as writer (Ritstier) and penciller (Oosterveer) for “Storm”, a successful European comic series created by Englishman Don Lawrence,  and started a new western-comic,  “Ronson inc.” for the legendary Dutch comic-magazine “Eppo”

Minck Oosterveer debuted in US-comics with the aforementioned “Zombie Tales/ Zaambi” written by Cris Morgan and published by BOOM!-studios. Early 2009 until 2010 he collaborated with American writer Mark Waid to draw the mini-series “The Unknown” and “The Unknown: The Devil made flesh” which where published by BOOM!-studios as well.

He is currently working on two projects at Marvel Comics, which include “Ruse” and a Spider-man island adventure, neither are to be missed!

Minck will give a sketching demonstration following the interview.
The evening also includes raffles for merchandise from Eva Ink Artist Group. Three tickets for $5. All proceeds will benefit MoCCA.
In addition, a special print will be available only at the event.

Stay around for refreshments, mingle, and enjoy this unique opportunity for a cross cultural exchange with a consummate comics professional.

DENE VERNON-THE THING BELOW

While Gavin waited for the latest Chung Ling Soo script I needed to keep him busy!  And it just so happened that I found a script from 1993 featuring the UKs first supernatural sleuth/detective -Dene Vernon.
Set in the late 1940s, Vernon is recovering from a previous case when he is called upon to investigate mystery deaths in London dockland. Despite the assistance of one of the Silvermaigne family, famous werewolf, demon and vampire hunters, it looks as though the threat of Lorimed may be the Man of Mystery’s last….
Did Gavin want to draw it?  Yes! This 52 pager includes a text back-up feature.

So, for those of you who still haven’t ordered a copy (why not?) here are a few pages.

CHUNG LING SOO   Leave a comment

Not only does Gavin Ross edit the official Marc Bolan/TREX fanzine but he was the only person I ever met in comics who knew who Chung Ling Soo was!  A magic fan, Gavin originally sent me a three page Chung strip in the early 1990s and went on to draw Chung Ling Soo:The Curse Of  The Jade Dragon.
Gavin is currently working on the latest book: The Mystery Of The Thames Serpent, having just completed Dene Vernon:The Thing Below.
The 29 pager contains the original 3 page strip plus text back-up

MERRIWETHER:THE TEST OF SATAN   Leave a comment

How could Ben Dilworth, another legend of the British Small Press era, not do a follow-up to Merriwether in his own inimitable style and, in places, tongue firmly in cheek?
This 27 pager looks at the images flashing through Merriwethers mind in the seconds between life and death.
What prepared and set him on his quest?

MERRIWETHER: GODS DEMON-THUMPER   Leave a comment

Resplendent behind a cover by noted Bristol artist Paul Ashley Brown, the original tag to this collection of Merriwether strips was “This year the Church of England Goes Hard Core!” -it was pointed out that this might be taken to have a double meaning so it was dropped!
Merriwether, 6 feet 3 inches tall is built like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his younger days and his unquestioning faith in God leads him head-long into confrontation with ancient Egyptian deity (or is it?), vampyres, demons -including a whole English village full of demons and the dark one himself -a confrontation with Satan!
Originally a back-up feature in the Small Press version of Black Tower Adventure, like The Bat, the Reverend caught on and has quite a following.  The shocking conclusion to the series (never before published) had fans in an uproar!
58 pages including back-up feature.  Available via the online store.
